Residential Clean Energy Act (RCEA) & Your Campervan Battery Upgrade

A Tax Incentive Guide for Class B Van Owners

The Residential Clean Energy Credit (IRS Code Section 25D) offers a 30% federal tax credit for qualified clean energy upgrades—including solar power and battery storage. As of 2025, this credit includes standalone battery systems, meaning you don’t need solar panels to qualify. This credit is set to end December 31st 2025.

Bumpers & Skid Plates for Campervans

Does This Apply to My Class B Campervan?

Yes—if you use your campervan as a primary or secondary residence, you may be able to claim this credit! Eligible Class B models include:

The IRS allows mobile dwellings that meet basic living standards (sleeping, cooking, toilet facilities) to qualify as residences for the purpose of the credit.

Eligible Battery Upgrades

The 30% tax credit applies to battery systems that:

  • Have a capacity of at least 3 kWh
  • Are used in a residential setting (Motorhomes may count as secondary residence)
  • Are new and permanently installed

Common Qualifying Systems:

  • Lithionics 320Ah or 640Ah Smart Batteries
  • Battle Born Heated Lithium Batteries
  • Victron Smart Battery Banks
  • Renogy Lithium Batteries
  • Goal Zero Yeti Power Stations (if installed as fixed systems)

Adding Solar? It’s Covered Too.

Adding solar panels (either rooftop or portable) with your battery upgrade is still eligible under the credit. Solar panels can further reduce your tax liability and improve your off-grid performance.

How to Claim the Credit

  1. Keep an itemized invoice showing battery capacity and installation labor.

  2. Provide documentation that your van is a primary or secondary residence (insurance, registration, financing).

  3. File using IRS Form 5695 with your federal tax return.
